Over 30 years and 1,500+ completed exterior projects across Nebraska, we’ve seen siding in every condition imaginable. The homes that come out of it with the smallest repair bills are almost always the ones where the homeowner caught something early and called before the moisture found its way into the structure. That’s what this guide is designed to help you do. 8 signs your siding needs replacing, that shouldn’t be ignored.

By the time most homeowners call us about their siding, they’ve been aware of at least one or two of these signs for a while. And almost every time, we find more behind the panels than what was visible from the outside. The longer siding issues go unaddressed, the more company they bring.

Here’s what to watch for, and why each sign matters more than it might look.

1. Visible Cracks, Splits, or Holes

What it looks like: Individual panels with cracks running across the face, splits at seams or corners, or actual holes from impact damage.

What’s causing it: Cracks and splits in vinyl siding often come from impact — hail, branches, or debris — or from age-related brittleness as the material loses flexibility over time. LP SmartSide and engineered wood products crack when moisture has gotten into the substrate and the freeze-thaw cycle has expanded and contracted the panel repeatedly.

What happens if you ignore it: Any breach in the siding surface is an entry point for moisture. Water gets behind the panel, soaks into the housewrap and sheathing, and begins working on the framing. Rotted sheathing and framing are significantly more expensive to repair than replacing the siding that let the moisture in.

2. Warping or Buckling Panels

What it looks like: Panels that no longer lie flat against the wall — bowing outward in the middle, lifting at the edges, or rippling along their length.

What’s causing it: Warping almost always indicates moisture. When water gets behind a siding panel and is absorbed into the substrate, the material expands and distorts. It can also happen from improper installation — panels nailed too tight that can’t expand and contract with temperature changes will buckle as Nebraska’s seasons swing between extremes.

What happens if you ignore it: Warped panels create gaps at seams and edges that weren’t there before. Those gaps let in more moisture, which causes more warping. It’s a self-reinforcing cycle that accelerates once it starts. And because buckled panels are often a symptom of moisture that’s already gotten behind the wall, ignoring the visible sign means ignoring whatever is building inside.

3. Fading or Severe Discoloration

What it looks like: Siding that’s significantly lighter than it was — or that’s faded unevenly, with some panels noticeably different from others.

What’s causing it: UV exposure is the primary driver of fading in vinyl siding. Nebraska gets significant UV exposure, and older vinyl without UV-resistant pigments fades faster than modern formulations. Severe or uneven fading suggests the material is past its functional prime.

What happens if you ignore it: Fading itself isn’t a structural failure — but it’s a signal that the siding is aging out. And aged siding that’s visually past its prime is also siding that’s lost some of its structural integrity and weatherproofing capacity. The appearance is the visible indicator of what’s happening to the material itself.

4. Peeling Paint

What it looks like: Paint lifting, bubbling, or peeling on painted siding — especially near seams, corners, or around windows and doors.

What’s causing it: Peeling paint on siding is almost always a moisture signal. When moisture gets behind the siding and into the substrate, it pushes outward — and paint lifts. Peeling at seams specifically suggests water is entering at joints that are no longer sealed.

What happens if you ignore it: Repainting won’t fix this. The moisture source has to be addressed — and if it’s getting behind the siding, the siding needs to be looked at. Paint that’s peeling because of underlying moisture will keep peeling no matter how many coats go over it.

  1. Dents or Impact Marks After a Storm

What it looks like: Visible dents across the face of vinyl or LP SmartSide panels — often in a pattern that mirrors the hailstone size from a specific storm event.

What’s causing it: Hail. Nebraska averages 50+ severe storm events per year, and hail impacts siding the same way it impacts roofing. Vinyl panels dent without necessarily cracking. LP SmartSide can sustain surface damage and compromised panels depending on hail size and velocity.

What happens if you ignore it: Dented siding is often the visible part of a larger story. The same storm that dented your siding likely also damaged your roof, gutters, and windows. Addressing it as part of an insurance claim — alongside the roof — means one inspection, one claim, and a more complete restoration. Addressing only the roof and leaving the siding means a second project down the road.

6. Gaps or Separations at Seams and Corners

What it looks like: Visible gaps where panels meet, where siding meets trim, or at corners — openings that weren’t there when the siding was new.

What’s causing it: Siding expands and contracts with temperature changes. Over time — especially in Nebraska’s climate, where temperature swings are significant — panels shift, caulk dries out, and the tight seams of a new installation open up. It can also happen from settling or from the fasteners that hold panels in place backing out over time.

What happens if you ignore it: Gaps are direct water entry points. Even a small gap at a corner or seam allows wind-driven rain to get behind the siding on a stormy day. In a Nebraska spring or summer storm where rain is coming in sideways, even a modest gap becomes a significant vulnerability.

7. Mold, Mildew, or Algae on the Surface

What it looks like: Dark streaks, green patches, or fuzzy growth on the exterior siding — most commonly in shaded areas or on north-facing walls.

What’s causing it: Mold and algae thrive where moisture lingers on a surface. Some amount of exterior growth is normal and cleanable — but widespread, persistent growth that comes back quickly after cleaning suggests the siding surface is holding moisture longer than it should, often because the material itself has degraded or because moisture is wicking from behind.

What happens if you ignore it: Surface mold that’s cleaned regularly is manageable. Mold that’s symptomatic of moisture behind the siding is a different problem. If the growth keeps coming back in the same spots despite cleaning, get a professional assessment — the siding surface may be the symptom, not the source.

8. Rising Energy Bills

What it looks like: Heating and cooling costs that have crept up over time without an obvious explanation.

What’s causing it: Your siding contributes to your home’s thermal envelope — the barrier that keeps conditioned air in and outdoor temperatures out. Siding that’s deteriorated, pulling away from the wall, or no longer provides a continuous barrier allows thermal transfer that forces your HVAC to work harder. This is especially true for homes with older siding that was installed without insulation backing.

What happens if you ignore it: The energy loss doesn’t resolve on its own. Replacing aging siding — particularly with insulated options — can meaningfully reduce heating and cooling costs and pay back part of the investment over time through lower utility bills.

Not Sure Which Category Your Siding Falls Into?

Some of these signs point toward a repair. Others, multiple signs present at the same time, or any sign accompanied by evidence of moisture behind the panels — suggest replacement is the more practical path.

The only way to know for sure is a professional assessment. We’ll look at the full picture — not just what’s visible from the outside — and give you an honest answer about where your siding stands.
